Robots with a human twist
Meet the Family received a merit award at the Portage Ceramic Awards 2010. The group brings together mechanical bodies and organic limbs, using clay and earthy glazes to soften the boundary between human, machine and monster.
The original catalogue records stoneware fired to 1230°C, with muted commercial stains, an ash glaze made from kanuka tree, and mudstone glazes sourced from Titirangi.

Artist statement, 2010
Robots with a human twist. Part man part machine, a reflection on the ever increasingly technological environment, I wanted to create robots that had an organic/human feel to them. Clay became the perfect medium to achieve this, it softened the robotic features of each piece letting them gel easily with the organic limbs. Once bisque fired it was important to colour the pieces to further reiterate the symbiotic relationship. They wear a combination of muted commercial stains plus an ash glaze made from kanuka tree and mudstone glazes all sourced from Titirangi. The figures are stoneware, fired to 1230 degrees Celsius, having a resulting earthy ancient appearance. Rather than ask what percentage man and what percentage machine, is it 100% monster?
